Wall lights are the most traditional type of lighting to be used in the garden. Most often used for security these days, they can be quite overpowering. A nice old-fashioned carriage lamp casts a nice golden glow though, or for the contemporary garden the soft light of a modern globe is enough to light up an entrance.

Around the garden, post lights are invaluable – used to provide path markers and subtly highlight features, either solar or mains powered posts are worth considering. Ground lights are a good alternative, often disguised as rocks or statues.
If you have decking or are thinking of installing some, then consider decking lights as they are very effective. These low-level, recessed lights are available in various colours and styles, and can be run on either solar or mains power.
String lights can be used to turn your garden into a magical fairy grotto at night. Whether solar or mains powered, there are many varieties to choose between, from colourful strings of Chinese lanterns to delicate little dragonflies.
Oil lanterns, large oriental paper lanterns, citronella candles, nightlights in ornamental holders and the like can be placed on tables or ledges to light up the scene when a party carries on after dark.
Don’t let the cold weather put you off from spending time outside – a wide range of garden heating options means that you can enjoy your garden whatever the weather.
Patio-heaters, powered by either bottled gas or mains electric, can be very effective. The gas-powered versions are usually quite tall, and require a reasonable amount of space, but offer instant heat. With electric heaters you have a number of options, from wall-mounted to free-standing or even parasol heaters.
If you prefer a more traditional, rustic method of heating, then a chiminea, fire bowl or brazier offers a lovely open fire to warm your hands and toast your marshmallows on. Chimineas and firepits with mesh covers are the safest of these, as they will prevent sparks from flying. Some fire pits and baskets have a grill option so you can use them as a barbecue as well as a heater.
